No-Heat Curls with the Friar Tuck

About a year ago, I made a post called Curl Your Hair Without Heat about how to curl your hair with a headband after watching a video on YouTube. It has since turned into my most-viewed post and has generated a ton of emails from readers who want to know exactly how to do it.

Today, I bring you my very own video tutorial for what I like to call the "Friar Tuck."

More details:
  • I have fine hair—and a lot of it. It holds curl well.
  • This curling method does not work if your hair is wet. It must be completely dry.
  • If your hair falls out of this easily, try wrapping your hair in a silk scarf before going to sleep.
  • If you have long hair, try using two headbands to reduce tangles & make it easier to tuck!
  • Dry shampoo used: Suave
  • Sea salt spray used: Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Spray
  • Songs in the video: (1) 1234 by Feist (2) New Soul by Yael Naim
  • The photos below show my hair after an entire day. Some days the curls don't last quite as long.

Twisted Pony

Recently, I tried out a new kind of ponytail, similar to this twisted side pony that I did. As soon as I finished it, I knew I needed to share it!

Ready for the steps?
  1. I was going on second-day hair that day, so I bobby pinned my front pieces up into a bump.
  2. Just like in the twisted side pony, I gathered a small section of hair at the nape of my neck and secured it in a low ponytail with a clear elastic band.
  3. Working from the bottom to the top with the loose hair, I gathered small sections and began twisting them backwards and pinning them around the clear elastic band.
  4. I would twist and pin a small section from the right, and then switch it and twist and pin a section from the left.
  5. You don't have to twist the pieces back, but as you can see in the top right photo, it gives the hair some cool definition.
  6. Try to hide the bobby pins. If you can't, it's OK!
  7. Once it was all pinned, I separated and tugged on a couple pieces to give my hair a bit more volume and texture.
  8. Finish with a light veil of hairspray!
I'd love to see you try this look!
If you do, make sure to tweet or instagram me a photo with the hashtag #twistedpony!

Twisted Side Pony

It's been almost three months since I have done a hair tutorial.
What. the. hay.

Don't hate... because considering that Bye Bye Beehive has a little over 2 months (2 months!)
until its completion date on October 11,

I figured I may as well begin making the transition to showcasing my random hair tutorials on my other blog.
But don't fret, if you're a follower of BBB, I'll probably double post them.

Maybe not.
Who knows.

Today, I'm showing you the twisted side pony.

Dress: Francesca's // Earrings: Francesca's // Necklace: c/o Lisa Leonard  // Bracelets: c/o Payton Woodcraft

As you remember on Monday (if you read Aunie Sauce),
I mentioned that this weekend I did a promo event for Francesca's.
What I really did was go to their store for an hour or so and style their customers.
I had so. much. fun.
I also met lots of new friends! A special shout-out to Rhylee, Adrianna and Ashley!

Like usual,
I was running late to get there.
I had taken my time that morning to sleep in, get to the gym,
sweat my booty off,
and by the time I got home, I realized I had to be out the door in about 35 minutes.
Oops.

I did NOT have time to wash my hair,
and I was not about to go to Franny's with wet hair.
I can't use a hair dryer, remember?
So I quickly rolled it up in a friar tuck and hopped in the shower.
When I got out, I dabbed on some blush, shaded my brows, and put on a couple coats of mascara.
I had about 5 minutes before I had to leave,
so I quickly unrolled my hair from the "friar yuck."
To my immense surprise, I had curls almost as pretty as if I had slept in the headband overnight.
And I'd only had it in for 30 minutes!
I was expecing a slight curl to the tips, but not full-on waves.
Score. Humidity, thank you (this time) for creasing my fine, lifeless hair into a curl.

OK ok ok. Are you ready for how I did it yet?
This style was kind of inspired by this style.
Anyway, here's the how-to:
  1. I gathered a small section of hair at the nape of my neck and secured it in a low right-side pony with a clear elastic band.
  2. I took a couple of face-framing pieces from the left side and twirled them into a little twist. I stuck a bobby pin at the bottom of that to hold it in place and just let it hang down for the time being.
  3. Then, I gathered small sections of hair and began twisting them back (loosly) and secured them around the clear elastic ponytail holder.
  4. I kept it messy. I didn't want it to look like a "ponytail," but instead a side updo-of-sorts.
  5. As I twisted the sections back and pinned them, I made sure to only pin a small piece of the twist. I didn't want huge bobby pins showing everywhere. Plus, once the hair is twisted back like that, it won't move too much, so the whole thing doesn't need to be pinned.
  6. After all my sections were pinned, I grabbed the little extra twist and tucked it back behind the ponytail.
  7. I then pulled and tugged on a couple pieces to give my hair a bit more volume and to make it look a bit messier.
  8. If I were you, I would definitely finish this with a bit of hairspray, but mine didn't seem to move too much without it.
The little added twist would look really cool if you had highlights or colored dimensions in your hair.
It didn't show up so well in my au natural ombrè hair, but that's OK.
It's the thought that counts.

If you need help, refer back to that other tutorial.
Mine was clearly modified and doesn't look as nice, but I liked it a lot.
I even wore the same style the next day...
...with the same gross, dirty hair.
Because that's how I roll.

NYE Hair.

I had absolutely the hardest time trying to figure out what to do with my hair for New Year's Eve. There was the Holiday Updo, the Braided Bun, the Headband Chignon... I just had too many ideas.
I resorted to asking Daniel and his family what they thought. They immediately said a messy bun with a braid up the back. Done. No hairspray, teasing or curling required.

As you can see, I switched it up this time. Last time I did a regular French braid up the back, but this time I opted for a reverse French braid. I loved it~!
Happy New Year!

Scrunch It!

You know those days when you wake up,
Have approximately 5 minutes to get ready,
and your hair just isn't your first priority?
Those are the days I do this.

Scrunching.
However, normally when I scrunch my hair
I also use gel and a blow dryer.
Since I can't use either of those,
I sprayed my wet hair with It's A 10 leave-in conditioner,
scrunched my hair with my fingers a couple of times,
and let that hot mess dry.

I feel a slight bit frumpy today,
but it's low maintenance, and I can't ask for anything more than that!

The Twisted Step-Sister.

Surprise, surprise... I got up late today. It seems like this is becoming a regular occurrence for me. I think, "Gee, now that I don't have to "do" my hair, I can get up late!" The only problem with that thought is that... well, I can't keep getting up late. Because then, I don't have time to "do" my hair that I'm not supposed to "do." Does any of that make sense?

No? Okay then.

Despite my tardy awakening today, I had a cool hair idea in mind. I was going to attempt The Beauty Department's Twisted Sister. Needless to say... I'll inform you right now that it DID NOT WORK. But I know how to fix it for next time. I think...

Anyway-- I followed the Twisted Sister tutorial almost to a T, except for I forgot one minor detail. I didn't have the how-to photos in front of me while I did my hair this morning, and I totally spaced that you were supposed to "loosely twist" the hair before you pin it into the bun. Instead, I twisted it tightly. Oops. But to be quite honest, I kind of like how it turned out. Plus, since this was 3rd day hair (eww), I kind of had to make it a little bit tighter since it was quite oily (sorry, I know... that's gross). It may not be an elegant updo, but it will suffice for work, play and the gym. Awesome.

One other variation I added was that I pinned the front of my hair up into a bump. Since I'm not allowed to tease my hair to give the crown volume, as the tutorial suggests, I instead opted for some volume in the front that didn't require any back-combing.

Since step-sisters in fairy tales always seem to be less cool, shabby-looking, and always jealous of the princess, I give you my version of Twisted Sister, which is not quite as fancy, a little more homely, and therefore, the Twisted Step-Sister.

Aunie Hawk.

As you know, my name is Annelise. It is pronounced Ah-nah-lease-ah. Kind of like Monalisa. But not. It's Norwegian, thus the funky pronunciation. If you've been saying it Anna-lease, you're wrong. Or Ahna-lease. Still wrong. Or even Ann-elise. Nope.

AH-NAH-LEASE-AH. This is the only name I go by. No Anna, no Lisa, no Mona. Well... there are a few exceptions. My family calls me Icy, some of my friends from Redlands and former Boise State cheerleaders call me Lise, and my bestie Ashton and a few other awesome people refer to me as Aunie. But other than that... just Annelise.

I have taken a particular liking to one of the previously mentioned nicknames. Aunie. It's cute. It has a unique ring to it. Done.

So I decided that I needed to create a hairstyle, in honor of this blog, just for me. It has to be a go-to style. Something that can be done with second-day or clean hair.

Thus-- the Aunie Hawk was born.

I was in a particular rush to pick my mom up for the Boise State vs. Airforce game this weekend, and I needed to throw my hair into something-- and fast. My hair had lots of volume and hadn't been washed from the day before (remember the Wrap Snap & Go look?). So I grabbed a couple bobby pins, some hair comb clips and a single Wrap Snap & Go curler. A few short minutes later, I ended up with this:

The Aunie Hawk. It can be done to look very elegant and fancy, or it can be a messy updo for a night out on the town.

Here's the how-to for the Aunie Hawk:
  1. Separate your hair into two parts. One will be the upper half, like if you were going to put your hair half-up. The other will be the lower half.
  2. Secure the lower half in a bun at the nape of your neck. It can be curled up in a Wrap Snap & Go, like I did (photo below), twirled into a bun and secured with Spin Pins (which is what I did when I repeated the look on Sunday and it was SO MUCH easier), or just tied in a bun with a ponytail holder.
  3. Pin the top front pieces of your hair up in a bump on the top of your head. Pull out pieces to your taste to make it more poofy.
  4. Take the sides of your hair and secure them back with hair comb clips. The clips should be inserted toward your face, to make sure they stay in place.
  5. With the "hawk" hair left over in back, tousle it to achieve the look you desire. Since I couldn't use hairspray to keep the style in place, I inserted bobby pins in a couple of locations to make sure the curls stayed secure.
And that's it for the Aunie Hawk! It's so easy, quick, and really fun. You don't have to secure the bottom half of your hair in a bun under the top layers of hair... but I like the "updo" feel of it when the bottom half is pulled up.

What do you think of the Aunie Hawk? Is it lame or could you rock it?

You know I rocked it with my mom at the Boise State game. Go BRONCOS!!!

Bantu Knot-Out.

Ban-a-what? Don't worry, I didn't know what Bantu knots were, either. One of my natural hair buddies on Twitter checked out my blog and suggested I try Bantu knots for a fun and different style. I had to Google search them and even had to watch a YouTube tutorial to see what these were and how to do them.

As soon as I figured them out, I decided I was going to opt for a "Bantu knot-out." That is where you put your hair in Bantu knots, but then take them out for luscious, spiraled curls. Well, that's the intention anyway. I just couldn't resist this style! I went straight to work after I got out of the shower last night. It is recommended to do Bantu's on your hair when it is wet or slightly damp to help the knots stay in, and to also help your hair hold the curl. I added a leave-in conditioner as well to hopefully help preserve the knots.

About an hour and a full box of bobby pins later (since my hair is so fine it did not want to stay in these knots), I ended up with this look:

Yep. Sexxxayyy.

Within 10 minutes of having my knots completed, I was told that I would look good as a bald person and that I also looked like Buckwheat from Little Rascals. Awesome.

O-TAY!!! I guess that's at least more realistic than saying that I look like Bo Derek.

Before I went to bed, I sprayed the knots with water since they were starting to fall out. I then wrapped my hair with a silk scarf so my tossing and turning during the night wouldn't disrupt those little babies. And guess what? I even took a photo. Just for you... because once again, it's just such an attractive look for me.

Duck face.

This morning when I woke up, each knot was still in place. In fact, I don't even think I moved more than once or twice last night because my hair didn't budge a bit. After I finished getting ready, I removed all my bobby pins and unwound the knots.

Some of my hair was still a little damp (bummer) so I left it like this while I drove to work. I turned the air on high in my car in an effort to help dry the few spirals that were still damp.

When I got to work I ran my hands through the spirals and ended up with a kinked, funky look. I think I know what it feels like to have naturally curly hair now!

Ha! The back is simply dreadful. I was really not too happy with this look because it is just all over the place. I decided to grab a couple trusty bobby pins and secure the hair into bumps on each side of my part to help it look just a little bit more styled. I'm actually quite happy with how the front looks now.

The back is definitely still struggling, though. Sorry for all the photos today... I just couldn't resist the montage.

Overall, Bantu knots are so fun. They are a LOT of work, but they create a totally unique look that I would love to try again to see if I can make it look better. Who knows... maybe next time I'll just opt for Bantu knots (not the knot-out)... and go to work with those little balls all over my head! Wouldn't that impress the boys?! Hmmm... In fact... maybe I will try that. :)

Leftovers.

Are you a fan of leftovers? Some food just tastes so much better the day after it's made. For instance, cold pizza. Yum. Or Kraft Mac 'n Cheese. I will purposefully make Mac 'n Cheese just so I can put it in the fridge and eat it the next day. Am I weird? Maybe. But is it delicious? You betcha!

I was hoping the same would be true for my faux fro from yesterday. I'm still on the edge about how today's "leftover" hair turned out. I will be honest and tell you that when I woke up this morning it was quite greasy. Ew. On days where I ruffle my hair with my hands often, it always ends up greasy the next day. Today was no exception. Since baby powder is not a styling product, it's safe to say I can still use it. I added a bit to my roots this morning to help absorb some of the oil. It worked very well.

I ended up going with a simple ponytail with a bump in front. I pulled on a few of the pieces that I wanted to poof out a little bit, including the bump. I finished with a few strands of hair wrapped around my ponytail holder and secured them with bobby pins.

It's just OK. Normally I would also tease the ponytail to give it some good fluff. In my opinion, the bottom of this ponytail looks just absolutely haggard. That's okay, though. I guess I will be having a few days like this over the next year... unfortunately. But hey... at least my hair holds a crimp without hairspray... YESSS!
