My Messy Bun As Of Late

 

 

I'm fairly certain I have emphasized that 

I LOVE HAIRSPRAY

before, haven't I?

It used to be my saving grace when it came to making anything stay put,

making hair huge and poofy,

and making sure my hair did what I wanted.

And... now that I don't have it... I've been improvising.

I create a messy bun,

and then pull and tug to make it really big and messy.

Once it's nice and big, I take pieces and bobby pin them where I want them.

I don't point the bobby pins toward my pony tail holder (because to many makes it hurt!)...

I simply take a loop of bun (that's usually droopy and gross), 

and slide the bobby pin right over the chuck of hair I want to stay put, securing it to my head.

I make sure and do it under the visible part of loop, so you can't see the bobby pins while looking at my hair.

I usually end up with 5 or 6 bobby pins throughout my bun holding hair in place

to make it look bigger.

If that's confusing, I can do a vlog...

but it may take some persuasion :)

I. Found. A. Gray. Hair.

Yep. Gray ... or white ... hairs. I'm not sure which they are yet.

My initial reaction?

My opinion now? 

Eh... no biggie.

Maybe I'll go prematurely white like my grandma and have awesome snow-colored hair.

I'm convinced that these little white hairs have been there before...

but since I was always highlighting my hair I never noticed them.

So, thank you Bye Bye Beehive for showing me my true hair color.

Last week at work we had a Secret Santa gift exchange. My good buddy (and blogger extraordinaire), Zoë, ended up having me, and she gave me the cutest and funniest gift.

A BSU scarf, a Forever 21 BSU-colored beanie, and a Sally's gift card. I laughed out loud at that gift card. Thank you, Zoë. You truly made my day in many more ways than one.

P.S... Zoë did mention that the gift card was not due to my consistent haphazard appearance... however I think she was just saying that with a little *wink-wink* that seriously... I need to get it together. So Zoë, thank you for funding my future beautiful hair days. You're a rockstar. xoxo

Nightmares.

OK. I need to tell you. I have literally been having nightmares about my hair lately. I think this whole 365-day project is really getting to me.

I wake up in the middle of the night, drenched in sweat (literally), and I had just had a dream where I accidentally blow dried my hair or used some quick spritzes of hair spray.

I know that sounds so silly... but while I'm dreaming it... it's just horrible! In addition to messing up my BBB challenge, in the dream I always end up getting caught and I make them promise me they won't rat me out. Jeez... talk about no integrity!

Anyway... I want these crazy nightmares to go away. I know I can make it through the 365 days of this project... or am I dreaming again?

Annelise Au Naturel.

Yep. You heard me. OOF dah. After 16 days of this product and processing-free challenge, I finally broke down and didn't do anything with my hair.

I woke up this morning, showered and washed my hair, did my normal 10-minute get-ready routine, and left the house. I untangled my wet hair in the car. And a short 30 minutes later, I had this:

There you go. Annelise au naturel. The hair pictured above is a bona fide air-dried 'do. That means no teasing, no styling, no hairspray, and definitely no products applied to that hair.

Some may say it looks decent. I can't stand it. It wings out on the sides and just hangs on my head like a two-week old dishrag. Now you see why I'm all about sponge rollers, braids, and Wrap Snap & Go... no matter how cheesy they are.

So that's my au naturel look for you, as my coworker Zoë calls it. I think I'd much rather prefer to have naturally curly, big hair... or Annelise au les cheveux efféminé. AKA... Annelise with poofy hair!

Big Hair Bereavement.

In similar fashion to how a person would grieve a lost loved one, I am deeply mourning the loss of my big hair.

At first, I welcomed the thought of trying something new and embracing a new sense of myself. But now, the dreaded Big Hair Bereavement has begun.

Each day my roots seem more pronounced, my hair lays more limp against my head, and new hair inspirations are a dream of the past.

Oh, Big Hair, how I long for thee. How I wish I could be once more graced by your stiffness and teased magnificence. My existence is a mere sham without you.

Alas, only 354 more days until we are united again. How I count the days and tears that fall until I can once again experience your greatness.

Day 1.

Last night, I had nightmares about accidently using hairspray and ruining the BBB Challenge before I even had a chance to begin. And I mean I literally had nightmares. I woke up covered in sweat, grinding my teeth, and totally freaked out. This whole thing isn't even supposed to be that big of a deal. I mean, IT'S JUST HAIR, people!

This morning, my nightmares became a reality when I attempted to do my hair and remembered I wasn't allowed to tease it. See, my go-to wake-up-late hairstyle is a teased, messy bun. This morning, there was no teasing involved. It was a disaster. I wasn't able to create any volume, and the hair that was in place had fallen out within just a few short minutes of me styling it since I had no hairspray. Boo.

Even though my hair is haphazard today, I still thought I'd share a photo or two:

You know what makes this photo sexy? The toilet paper. Oh, and my name badge. OOH yeah.

To create this hair look, these are the steps I followed:

1. Take a small section of hair from one side of your part. Separate that little section into two pieces and twist them to create the "twists" look. Pin that twist under your hair at the back of your head by your occipital bone (or the bone in the back of your head). 
2. Repeat step 1 with another section behind the first, and again with another section on the other side of your part. 
3. Gather your hair to form a low ponytail at the nape of your neck. 
4. Using a hair tie, create a messy bun. Mine never look the same and are created by just pulling the hair through the tie and looping it into mini buns (if that even makes sense).
5. Pull on certain pieces to mess the look up a little and to create a bigger hair look (if desired). I'm never a fan of hair in my face, but if you want to pull out some face-framing pieces that would be cool, too.
6. The Secret... My hair would never do this if it had just been washed. Dirty (or second-day) hair is key for a look like this!

Overall, it really doesn't look that bad... but I'm miserable already. I miss my big hair! Actually... it's not so horrible. It did make getting ready a heck-of-a-lot easier. I just feel bad for all the people who have to look at me :)
